Black Randy & The Metrosquad - trouble at the cup 7"

  • From Los Angeles. I've been struggling with this band ever since I started writing FLEX in 1988; time to give it another try in 2011 and just write a new review. The A side has a stomping drum machine, bass and some guitar chords, and of course Dangerhouse owner Dave Brown yelling his lyrics - it's rather a poetry session than a song, but I've got to admit that the lyrics are pretty cool. “Loner with a boner” has a higher punk factor - sloppy, garagey, stumbling garage punk, but it's OK. The last song is rougher, noisier, more angular - proto noise rock? All in all it's an interesting record, especially considering the release date; and if you're into scummy lo-fi punk you might even consider it a classic of that genre. I still feel that the Black Randy 7”s are the weakest releases on this legendary label, though. [6]
