Dead Boys - night of the living dead boys LP

  • bomp. blp 4017 / 13 tracks / oct 1981
  • F: lolita. 5013 / 1981
  • D: line. llp 5117 / 1981
  • RI (LP, CD): bomp. / 1994
  • Bomp test pressings with plain white labels in regular sleeve. 1994 Bomp rerelease with original tracks and a new cover. French pressing has a different sleeve.
  • Kind of a live LP… “kind of”, because only the guitars and drums were actually recorded at the 1979 farewell show of the original lineup at CBGB's. Stiv did not sing into the microphone on purpose, so the original tapes were unusable. Bomp convinced him to rerecord the vocals in a studio two years later (“I need the money”, he yells in the intro to Sonic Reducer), and the audience noises actually come from a bunch of fans that were present in the studio. If you don't know this story, though, you probably won't guess that this is a semi-fake live LP; it all fits together nicely. All that said, the sound of this is quite good (there could be a little more bass, though), most of the hits are there, and the music is quite rough, especially compared to their second LP. “Detention Home” is unreleased. A must for fans. [7]
  • Tracks: detention home / 3rd generation nation / all this and more / caught with the meat in your mouth / tell me / catholic boy / won't look back // ain't it fun / what love is / ain't nothin' to do / i need lunch / son of sam / sonic reducer
