Until Don Caballero came along, instrumental bands (or even instrumental songs) were the big big exception in the punk/hardcore/postcore scene; and if a band tried it it usually turned out to be some unlistenable jam session crap. DC prove that you don’t need vocals to play intense, powerful, kickass music. They’re tight as hell and yet very sophisticated, complex and intelligent, like the bastard son of Big Black and Nomeansno. A 5” nuclear power plant. [9]

Instrumental-Bands sind in dieser Szene eher die Ausnahme, und wenn eine Band das Wagnis unternimmt, endet das meist in entsetzlichen Jam-Sessions oder Free-Jazz-Getöse. Don Caballero umschiffen diese Klippen souveränst und legen mit ihrem Debut ein Werk vor, das auch ohne viele Worte sehr aus­drucksstark ist.
