This was released in a time where many Boston bands turned their backs on hardcore and tried out metal and rock (well, as you know, most of them returned). This DYS LP is completely different to their Brotherhood EP. There is a strong rock/metal influence, and Dave tries to sing in a metal style - and fails horribly. Well, this could still pass as a mid-tempo crossover record, and apart from the whiny singing it’s not that bad really, the production is quite powerful, too, and “No Pain” is almost a classic. [7]

Fällt in die Zeit, in der viele bekannte Boston-Bands den HC für tot erklärten und in Richtung Rock weitermachten. Alle Welt war entsetzt, aber aus einiger Distanz betrachtet, ist die Musik auf der zweiten DYS-LP immer noch recht nah am HC; könnte man vielleicht als mittelschnellen Crossover durchgehen lassen. Dave Smalley versucht ergebnislos, aus seiner Stimme eine Hardrock-Röhre zu machen, was leider kläglich scheitert, er kann’s einfach nicht. Abgesehen vom etwas wimmrigen Gesang ist die Platte aber recht gut, wenn auch in der Gitarre einige Rock-Riffs zu viel sind. Pluspunkte sind die gute, knackige Produktion und das ausgereiftere Songwriting; und mit No Pain, no Gain hat man sogar einen echten Hit zustandegebracht. Mit Sicherheit nicht mit Brotherhood zu vergleichen, aber keineswegs eine schlechte Platte.
