Produced by Ian MacKaye & Don Zientara. Pressings: #1 - First US press in heavy cardboard sleeve, 45 rpm w/ lyric sheet. Test pressings (used as promos) exist; plain white sleeve with a xeroxed info sheet. The red vinyl US press that I listed before doesn’t exist. #2 - UK press on FOY/Dutch East India in thinner cardboard sleeve and with different cover layout (larger picture), “made in england” note & “dutch east india” logo on the back cover. 33 rpm, different insert. 500 of this pressing on pink/red vinyl (mine has faint black veins) without insert. A handful of sleeves for this edition have reversed printing (black on white), and on the back sleeve there’s some graphic test patterns on John Stabb’s arm. According to 30underdc.com 500 printed but all but 100 were destroyed, but I believe more than that survived without records (Vinyl Ink sold a bunch of these record-less inverted sleeves in the early 90s). A few came with records that also had inverted labels (black on white instead of silver on black), but many are in circulation without record, or with a regular record. #3 - 90s CD reissue adds four live tracks. #4 - Reflex Reissue has 2nd press sleeve, poster insert and adds 5 tracks (4 live from 1982 and one “mystery” track), two pressings: (a) 1800 on black, 100 on white, 100 on orange vinyl, 10 test pressings. (b) 500 on black.
Fast, powerful and inventive hardcore, good production, too. The Minor Threat/Faith influences are obvious, but this is good, original and diverse music nonetheless. A must for fans of early harDCore. I find it kind of sad that they’re not getting the kind of attention and appreciation that other, less interesting hardcore bands have received. [8]
Toll.
Tracks: hall of fame / hour of 1 / g.i. / puppet on a string / sheer terror // happy people / lost in limbo / plain to see / partyline / here’s the rope / insomniac
