Before Def Jam turned into an important hip hop label, owner Rick Rubin was a huge Flipper fan, so his band’s first 12” is all about re-creating the sound of his idols. It’s not a shame to love a band and to adapt their sound to a certain point, but this 12” is just a cut & paste job, slow, grinding, noisy hardcore weirdness, not bad, but without the wits or the coolness of the original; the cover versions on the B side don’t help a lot either. Daß Labelchef Rick Rubin (der hier auch als Sänger fungiert) ein absoluter Flipper-Fanatiker ist, ist auf den beiden Platten seiner Band kaum zu überhören. Hier ist das allerdings leider zu völliger Heldenverehrung verkommen; es wird halt langsam und schleppend dahingekracht, ohne eigene Elemente einzubringen. Auch die Coverversionen auf der B-Seite helfen da nicht viel. Für Flipper-Fans vielleicht interessant, mir gefällt die 7” aber um einiges besser.
