In the second half of the 80's, a big part of the LA punk and hardcore scene inexplicably drifted towards bad rock music and hair metal; even though Mind Over 4 are one of the better examples of that phase, it's still, well, hair metal and rock. There are still traces of the old LA punk, and here and there there are gloomier goth punk influences, so the music is actually quite diverse, but the rock part just has this tired, worn, old-fashioned feel to it. For a rock record, it's not that bad. [6]

In der zweiten Hälfte der 80er spielten in der LA-Punkszene plötzlich viele Bands Rock und Hair Metal - eine Entwicklung, die man sich heute nur als massenhafte Geschmacksverirrung erklären kann. Mind Over 4 zählen noch zu den besten Vertretern dieser Ära, hier und da schimmert noch der alte Punksound durch, und einige Songs haben einen recht interessanten Gothpunk-Touch. Ansonsten aber ist das eben Rock, der über weite Strecken schon sehr ausgelutscht klingt.
