One last exercise before they recorded their “opus magnum”, Double Nickles. They have left punk and hardcore already; although there’s a rougher guitar chord and some feedback here and there, most of this is hectic, jazzy, funky and very complex indie rock. A lot of the music is amazingly well-played, but it’s also got a cold and distant touch. An interesting and expertly executed avant-jazz/funk record, but the passion, energy and (occasional) catchiness of their other records is missing… almost; you’ve just about given up, and then along comes the great last song, in the Minutemen style we all know and love… [7]
