Produced by Steve Albini. #1 - Limited US vinyl version on Geffen/Sub Pop, clear vinyl, printed inner sleeve, lousy pressing quality, 15000 made. Special US CD version for K-Mart/Wal-Mart: the “embryo art” on the back cover was omitted, and the song title “rape me” was changed to “waif me” (actual song is the same). Yeah! Artistic freedom! #2 -  Euro press on LP/CD. #3 and #4 - Japanese and Australian CD pressing with one bonus track: Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip (this one is also on the UK CD).

Their futile attempt to escape superstardom. A lot noisier than Nevermind, but a lot of the songs sound like they’re un-commercial and un-melodic on purpose which is kind of hard to take serious. It's a tour de force, but there are some great tracks, like the single “Heart Shaped Box”. All in all a good album. [7]  

Nach vielen Verzögerungen, Gerüchten und Dementis dann schließlich doch erschienen: das dritte Album von Nirvana, der archetypischen Underground-Band, die an ihrem Star-Ruhm zerbricht. Die Band wollte mit diesem Album ausbrechen und nicht im melodischen Grunge-Kanal weiterschippern; bei vielen Songs hat man allerdings das Gefühl, dass hier absichtlich krachiger und unmelodischer zu Werke gegangen wird. So wichtig das für die Band gewesen sein mag, der Hörer ist damit oft überfordert. Hat nicht den Klassiker-Status des Vorläufers, ist aber in jedem Fall eine sehr gute LP; und ein paar Hits sind auch wieder dabei. Ansonsten fand ich es ziemlich erbärmlich, wie sich gerade die Schmierblätter, die diese Band hochgejubelt hatten, über den Tod von KC lustig gemacht haben.
