No New York - comp. LP

  • antilles. an 7067 / 16 tracks / 1978
  • RI: JAP: polygram. / 1998 (?)
  • Teenage Jesus feat. Lydia Lunch on vocals; DNA feat. Arto Lindsay (later in Lounge Lizards). + printed inner sleeve.
  • After the decline of New York's first punk scene around the CBGB's bands two branches continued to play innovative music: The first one was comprised of the rougher punk/hardcore bands (Stimulators etc.), the other one followed an artsier path and incorporated jazz, industrial and avantgarde; this was the “No Wave” scene (named to counter the commercial New Wave bands, of course), and this LP is probably the most important document of that time. Mostly weird, jazzy and noisy music that takes some time to get into; this is more than just artsy crap, though, most of it is good, interesting and intense music (and most of the bands still have distorted guitars). An important part of the “not-quite-punk” history. [7]
Insgesamt eher was für experimentierfreudige Ohren.
  • Tracks: Contortions - dish it out / flip your face / jaded / i can’t stand myself / Teenage Jesus and the Jerks - burning rubber / the closet / red alert / i woke up dreaming // Mars - helen fordsdale / hairwaves / tunnel / puerto rican ghost / D.N.A. - egomaniac’s kiss / lionel / not moving / size
