First EP by the band from Louisville, KY, that later spawned influential bands like Bitch Magnet, Bastro or Slint. This is a lot less complex and artsy than the mentioned bands, though, great melodic & powerful emo/pop core with the proverbial Hüsker Dü/Replacements influences, but more powerful and fresher, and with a mid-80s Dischord edge. Ihre erste mLP ist zwar noch nicht ganz ausgegoren; trotzdem hebt sich der Emo/ Popcore durch das Fehlen DC-typischer Gemeinplätze von anderen ab; auch Hüsker Dü, mit denen die Band oft verglichen wird, können nur mit wenigen Songs mithalten. Squirrelbait sind anders; melodisch, wehmütig und trotzdem kraftvoll; vor allem klingen sie wesentlich frischer als HD. (TB)
